At the Milwaukee Academy of Science students in Grade 7 have a unique opportunity to participate in Project Lead the Way.  The PLTW Curriculum introduces students to careers in engineering and technology, fields in which there are national employment shortages and pay scales are among the highest levels for entry level professionals or technicians.  The PLTW modules use computer aided design and other hands-on activities in a team format to teach national science standards and reinforce mathematics skills and concepts.

Students complete a series of projects in which they use Autodesk software to draft a design and then build a working model.  In completing the modules, student teams use the engineering process:  defining the problem, brainstorming and proposing solutions, developing prototypes, testing, design reviews, receiving feedback from others, choosing a solution, building a working model, testing it, and making improvements to the final design.

The middle school PLTW program consists of four ten week stand-alone modules:

  • Design and Modeling
  • The Magic of Electrons
  • The Science of Technology
  • Automation and Robotics
