5 MAS Seniors Receive Full Rides

As the school year comes to a close, we would like to congratulate our Class of 2020 graduates. We know that this wasn’t the way most of our students expected to end their Senior year, but we believe that their strength and perseverance will lead them to greater horizons. We are proud to say that for a sixth year in a row, MAS Seniors have had a 100% graduation and college acceptance rate.

We are especially proud of the five seniors that won full-ride scholarships to Universities around the state and country. Stephon Ricks will be attending Duke University through a Quest Bridge full-ride scholarship. Kaleim Taylor will be attending UW Milwaukee with a full-ride athletic scholarship. Darius Hannah will be attending Bradley University on a Full Athletic Scholarship. Jeremiah Lipscomb will be attending UW- Wisconsin Madison through the All in Milwaukee Scholarship. Diamond Martin will be attending UW Madison through the All in Milwaukee Scholarship.

We interviewed some of our Scholars that received full rides regarding their time at MAS. Below is an interview of some of these students and their experiences.

Stephon Ricks — Duke University

What are you most excited about your Freshman yr. in college?

What I am most excited about is exploring the new environment. I have lived in Milwaukee since I was in the 4th grade. However, moving 14 hours away to Durham, NC will alter what I consider my “daily life”. For many that is terrifying but the uncertainty about this new experience allures me.

What is a valuable lesson you learned at MAS that you will try to keep once you start college?

A valuable lesson I learned is to simply do what I can. Honestly, you never know where an organization, a mentor, a program, or anything else will take you. And you won’t know until you make the effort to involve yourself in that opportunity.

What would you like to tell an incoming Freshman about how to make the most of MAS?

I would tell an incoming freshman to be themselves. Another piece of advice I would offer is to check out the book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey. I know most books like this seems (and can very well be) boring. But this book is worth the read.

Darius Hannah – Bradley University

What are you most excited about your Freshman yr. in college?

I’m most excited about starting my journey of becoming an engineer. Also, Even more excited for being giving the opportunity to be a college athlete.

What is a valuable lesson you learned at MAS that you will try to keep once you start college?

A valuable lesson I will continue on throughout college is work ethic on & off the court. I can’t just focus on sports more than the classroom they’re equal opportunities.

What would you like to tell an incoming Freshman about how to make the most of MAS?

I would tell every incoming freshman to take advantage of the opportunities MAS will give! College visits, STEM programs, and career field trips. All of them will help plan your future success. Go into high school with an open mind ready to not just become a better student but also a better person.

Jeremiah Lipscomb — UW-Madison

What are you most excited about your Freshman yr. in college?

I most excited about meeting new people and making connections. Being independent is also appealing. Living in a dorm and having many personal responsibilities makes me feel like an actual adult.

What is a valuable lesson you learned at MAS that you will try to keep once you start college?

It’s best to make sure you complete your work and receive good grades. I’m proud of the many things I was able to accomplish through my academics and work ethic.

What would you like to tell an incoming Freshman about how to make the most of MAS?

In order to make the most out of your freshman year, it’s best first build a solid academic background. This is what got me the many opportunities I received, be it my full ride scholarship or internships. Enjoy the different events, sports games, and activities MAS has to offers. MAS has some very encouraging and wise staff members. I would also recommend introducing yourself to as many people as possible because you will never know what they can do for you outside of school.
